Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union (LAPFCU) would like to inform members of a phishing scam that performs fraudulent card-not-present transactions (Internet, telephone, and mail-order purchases) by obtaining the three-digit security code printed on the back of VISA and MasterCard credit and debit cards.
The way this scam works is a scammer calls, acting as a representative from VISA or MasterCard and notifies a cardholder that some suspicious activity was charged against their account. Once the cardholder denies any such activity, the scammer asks the cardholder to verify their identity by reading off the three-digit security code printed on the back of the card. Some people are fooled because this scam only attempts to obtain the three-digit code but that is because the scammer already has the credit card number. The scammer then provides the cardholder a confirmation number and contact information to make the call seem legitimate.
LAPFCU urges members to never give out personal and financial information, including your three-digit security code, to anyone who may contact you through e-mail, telephone, voice message, text message, or mail.
If you think you are a victim of this scam, LAPFCU urges you to:
